Tool Selection
Penetrative Breaking In penetrative breaking, a conical or chisel tool is forced into the material. This method is most effective when the material is: soft, stratified, plastic, or has low-abrasive properties.
Impact Breaking In impact breaking, the material is fractured by transferring powerful mechanical stress waves from the tool into the object. Impact breaking is most effective for hard, brittle, and highly abrasive materials. Large breakers have high impact energy and are excellently suited for this method. If a conical tool is used on hard material, the sharp tip will heat up and wear out very quickly.
Correct Tool Operation
Use the hydraulic breaker only for fracturing rock, concrete, and other hard materials.
Always keep the breaker tool perpendicular to the surface. Keep the downward pressure and the breaker tool aligned. If the object moves or the surface fractures, correct the working angle immediately.
Do not strike a single spot for more than 15 seconds at a time. If the object does not break, stop the breaker and change the tool's position.
When the tool is used in one spot for too long, a layer of rock dust forms underneath it. This dust dampens the impact force and also generates heat, which can lead to the deformation of the tool tip.
Listen to the operating sound of the breaker. If the sound becomes higher-pitched or the impact force seems less effective, the tool is incorrectly positioned. This can also mean there is insufficient downward pressure on the tool. Reposition the tool and press it firmly against the object.
Do not strike and pry with the tool at the same time, as this may cause the tool to snap. Rocks in hard or frozen ground can exert prying forces on the tool. Be cautious and stop breaking if you feel sudden resistance under the tool.
Do not use the tool to move rocks. The lower part of the breaker housing is designed for repositioning boulders.
Do not use the tool as a lever after it has penetrated concrete, rock, or hard ground. The tool may bend and/or break.
Blank firing can destroy the breaker's most critical components, starting with the tool and the tool retaining pins. Avoid blank firing!
Frozen Ground Applications
A hydraulic breaker is an effective way to break frozen ground, especially the surface layer. However, if there are electrical or other cables within the frozen layer, it is nearly impossible to avoid damaging them. Breaking can also cause vibrations and cracking in nearby buildings. The advantage of using a breaker is that the excavated material is broken into smaller pieces compared to using a ripper, for example. This reduces the material's swell factor, leading to lower transportation costs.
Avoiding blank firing can sometimes be difficult in frozen ground applications, as the fractured structure may contain voids into which the tool can suddenly sink.
